Hans Christian Andersen and the Little Mermaid
Mr. Chen has arranged for the little family to cross secretly into Hong Kong—a place known for its bright skyline and bustling streets. Under the cover of darkness and with careful planning, Siu Zi, her father and Grandmother, along with Mr. Chen have boarded a small boat that carries them silently across the water. The sea is calm, its surface reflecting a tapestry of starlight, as if the heavens themselves are guiding them. Siu-Zi lies nestled between her father and grandmother, wrapped up in blankets, in the forward part of an open boat with quiet motors propelling them along. Their is an air of mystery and tension.

Southeast Asia. Modern day. Afternoon rain forces us into the coolness of the little house, surrounded by rice paddies, where Grandmother assembles strings of Christmas lights; bound for somewhere. Young mother watches three children grow, and wonders: What will their lives be? Can’t dream of what she’s never seen; can’t see what she can’t dream.

I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me, And what can be the use of him is more than I can see. He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head; And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed. The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow— Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow; For he sometimes shoots up taller like an india-rubber ball, And he sometimes goes so little that there’s none of him at all. He hasn’t got a notion of how children ought to play, And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way. He stays so close behind me, he’s a coward you can see; I’d think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me! One morning, very early, before the sun was up, I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup; But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head, Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.
Southeast Asia. Modern day. Nearer to the city now, the bus thumps and bumps to a slower pace. Grinding gears mark spaces between dirty children, playing obliviously in the road. Neither village nor metropolis, outskirts have no identity: Just a blurry line of encroachment; a temporary half-life on the way to something more. Dust springs up from the tires of trucks headed both ways on the road. A little girl stands crying in a mud puddle; her brothers laughing from the sides. She has to learn rejection to participate in this brutal, belonging dance. A little life, and a little death for a product truly worthy of its name: a good woman is hard to find.

Paint this scene: At length Siu-Zi and her father and grandmother and the others in their little company of friends came to a safe house in Hong Kong. It wasn’t as if there was no more reason to be afraid, though. One of the people who were helping Siu-Zi’s father remarked that they were very fortunate, since officers from the foreign ministry had come to the door just one day before Siu-Zi and her family had arrived, asking if there were any illegitimate travelers staying there. The man, whose name Ah Zi couldn’t remember, had laughed when he said, “We were able to tell them the whole truth! Nobody was staying at that house but me and my wife.” Show a montage with Siu-Zi and her father and grandmother, and the couple who run the safe house seated at a table talking, and the man and his wife answering the door, with police outside questioning them.
As the days turned into weeks in Kuala Lumpur, Ah Zi would often sit by the window, drawing in her notebook and writing stories of her journey. Stories of secret meetings in dim teahouses, of starlit crossings over whispering seas, and of kind strangers who risked their own safety for the sake of others. In her writings, the past and the present mingled together, creating a tapestry of hope that she could share with her new friends in Wing Sun’s class—a reminder that even in the darkest of times, a little seed of courage could sprout into a brilliant, life-changing bloom. Ah Zi also wrote about the kind-hearted, handsome man she had met in the time of her greatest fear, and how He had comforted her and given her the confidence she needed to face the future. Show me a page from Siu-Zi's sketchbook and make it look like sketches in colored pencil.

An outdoor scene in a park. a merry-go-round is nearby. A mother squats down to help her little boy, who is crying and making a fuss. other kids are playing in the background but this little boy is very unhappy. Mom has a kind and gentle face and is trying to help him feel better.

Paint this scene fo rme: Siu-Zi is 12 years old, and her father lovingly calls her Ah Zi, meaning “little seed.” She has always been a quiet, observant child. In the bustling streets of Guangzhou, where her early memories shimmered with bright festivals and quiet moments by the river, life had once seemed full of endless possibility. Until two years ago. She could still see vividly the day her Mother had come home early from her job. She was ill, and while Siu-Zi had seen her ill before, it had never been like this. She remembered with painful clarity the days and nights when her Mother, and then her Grandfather, had lay in bed, hardly moving, barely able to breathe. And then the terrible sadness of the day they were taken by the doctors – were they doctors? They seemed more like policemen in white uniforms! – to the hospital. Siu-Zi never saw either of them again. And it wasn’t just in her home, but in many homes in her part of the city, and then, she learned later, all over the country, something her Father called a pandemic was breaking up families, making mothers and fathers, and grandmothers and grandfathers, disappear. Siu-Zi and her Father were locked in their apartment for a very long time, unable to go outside. They scarcely had enough water to drink, and not nearly enough food to eat. After those terrible days, a deep, silent sorrow had settled over the family.
Father and Grandmother with Siu Zi leaving their home in a Guangzhou street in the dark of night. There is an air of secrecy. Siu Zi clutches her small bag, its contents little more than a few treasured keepsakes and faded photographs. Her father’s reassuring hand on her shoulder, and the soft presence of her grandmother at his side, give her the courage to move forward. A taxi waits down the street to take them to the train.
“And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” Jesus stands among His disciples in a shady patio area outdoors talking to this scribe. His disciples wonder at the exchange. Several of them are also engaged in conversations set around the one Jesus is having. We see Jesus from the left rear quarter, where we can see only the back of His head and the side of his face. His hands are expressing His point. The scribe to whom He speaks has a poignant, thoughtful expression.
Inside an informal church in London. Wing Sun's father has been invited to attend with his counterpart from the office. He doesn't have anything else to do on Sunday morning, so he goes along. we are standing in the back of the room. There are many people of different ethnicities, the Pastor is standing up front alongside a worship leader with a guitar, and a young black woman, facing the audience. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, but Wing Sun's father feels a little uncomfortable.
