“And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.” (Jonah 4:8, KJV)

“And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.” (Matthew 26:26-29, KJV) Use Matzo style bread
Luminous Storybook Illustration Style, Rich Color Saturation, Magical Realism. A dramatic, painterly scene capturing the precise moment of tragic error on an old, mossy stone bridge spanning a calm river at sunset.

The Reality (The Dog on the Bridge): A scruffy, hungry-looking terrier stands frozen mid-snarl on the edge of the bridge, looking downward. Its mouth is wide open in an aggressive bark. Suspended in mid-air, just inches below its open jaws, a real, decent-sized meaty bone is falling toward the water. The dog’s expression is a mix of greed and sudden confusion.

The Illusion (The Reflection): The surface of the river below is glassy and still, acting like a perfect, deceptive mirror. The reflection shows the same dog, but the reflected bone in its mouth appears impossibly huge, glistening, and juicier than the real one. The reflection is almost hypnotically bright, brighter than the reality above the water. The warm golden light of the setting sun makes the water shimmer invitingly.

A candid, tender photograph of a person lying sick in a dimly lit, cozy bedroom, buried under a heavy quilt with only their pale face showing, eyes closed in sleep. Tissues and medicine bottles clutter a bedside table. Curled beside the person in bed is a fluffy calico cat that has a pair of feathered angel wings. The cat is asleep too. Soft, natural light streams from a window to the left. Film grain.

The Crucial Riding Posture: The Merpeople are riding large, powerful, scaled hippocamps (mythical sea-horses). “And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut tree; and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods. And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink. And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstraked, speckled, and spotted. And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Laban's cattle. And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods. But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's. And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.” (Genesis 30:37-43, KJV)

And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:36-38, KJV)

A historically accurate and atmospheric depiction of the signing of the Mayflower Compact aboard the ship in November 1620. The scene is set in the dimly lit, cramped cabin of the Mayflower, with the ship's timbers and rigging subtly visible, conveying the challenging conditions of the voyage. A simple table or chest serves as the signing surface. The primary focus is on a small group of the last individuals signing the document: specifically, the indentured servants (or 'strangers' not directly part of the Separatist congregation) approaching or at the table. Their expressions show a mix of weary determination, understanding of the necessity, and perhaps a hint of quiet apprehension or resignation to this new social contract, given their status. They are dressed in the plain, practical clothing typical of 17th-century commoners and laborers. Figures of prominent Pilgrims or 'Saints' (like William Bradford or John Carver) are visible in the background, observing the proceedings with a sense of gravity and leadership, but they are not the central focus. The lighting is low and warm, perhaps from a lantern, creating a chiaroscuro effect that highlights the faces of the signers. The atmosphere conveys the momentousness of the act under difficult circumstances, the diverse composition of the group, and the early seeds of self-governance in a new world. The artistic style is a realistic, historically detailed oil painting, capturing the solemnity and human element of this pivotal historical moment."

Now, those captains must learn what the river will do
when it makes that great turn out of sight.
How it dashes them up on the rocks of the shore
How it spins to the left and the right.
It beats them and breaks them and crushes their pride
Leaves them dizzy and sick and all jumbled inside
‘til they’ve all but forgotten that glorious ride
lying flat on their deck in the sun.
There they lie, drying out in the sun.

As you round the point where the river was bent
and survey the great wideness ahead,
you can see all those captains alone on their decks,
beat and broken and very near dead.
Then the current takes hold and there’s naught you can do
as it drags you down into its maw.
Headed straight for those rocks, you make ready to crash
but at last, you rise up, roll and yaw.

Going back and away, then forward again,
fearing each time, the rocks will prevail!
You’re trapped in a cycling, circling tide,
in an eddy withstanding a gale.
But each time you circle that great whirling tide
and you’ve not hit the rocks or been thrown to the side
and you’re kept from the falls, cascading and wide,
for the eddy’s small mercy give praise.
Give the merciful currents your praise!
