Inside a large office building in London, on the 5th floor, Wing Sun's father, a Chinese Malaysian man in his 30s, speaks to his counterpart in the company, and English man, about business. Other workers are seated at their desks and standing at a copy machine. There are some Black people, but mostly British. One whole wall of the room is glass and we can see something of London outside.
An interior scene. An old Bible with dog-eared pages, a black leather cover, and words of Christ in red sits open on a table. The camera sees the Bible at a 45 degree angle. The table and chair are old and worn, sitting on a worn carpet on a wood plank floor. There are some pens and highlighters, along with a red ribbon bookmark, a half-empty drink and some paper clips. The room is in low-light, and a small window is in the background. Someone has been studying and just stepped away for a moment. Some lines in the Bible are highlighted yellow.
At her Mother's house in Penang, Wing Sun's mother, a beautiful chinese woman in her 30s, is standing in her bedroom looking out the window at night. We see her from a quarter view inside the room. She is pensive and an air of tension fills the room as she remembers growing up in this house. Her hair is long and black, and she's wearing her housecoat. A lantern gives low light inside the room. It's raining outside.
Cinematic Historical Photograph, Gritty Realism, Chiaroscuro Lighting. A tense, high-stakes chess match taking place between two seasoned pirates inside the cramped, dimly lit stern cabin of a rocking galleon at sea during the night. The Players: On one side sits a grizzled, older Pirate Captain with a heavy grey beard and a scarred face, leaning over the board, his hand rubbing his chin in deep concentration. Opposite him is a younger, cunning Quartermaster with a gold tooth and a confident smirk, holding a clay pipe. The Board & Pieces: Between them is a heavy wooden table stained with grog. The chessboard is carved directly into the tabletop, with squares made of inlaid mother-of-pearl and burned wood. They are playing with the custom pirate-themed chess set (previously designed): The Captain's side uses pieces carved from yellowed whalebone (King with tricorn, Ship Rooks), and the Quartermaster's side uses pieces cast from dark, tarnished iron. A bone "Knight" piece is currently threatening an iron "Queen." The Atmosphere: The cabin is lit by a single, swaying oil lantern hanging overhead, casting long, moving shadows and illuminating the smoke in the air. Mugs of rum, a flintlock pistol, and rolled charts are cluttered around the board. Outside a stern window, a dark, stormy ocean is visible. The photo has a film grain texture.
